Barry Gooley taking part in a star party on the summit of Fujiyama (Mt Fuji) way back in the end of the 20th century. Our 12" dobsonian was joinied by a 6" Fujinon binocular, a 4" Miyauchi binocular along with a number of Vixen and Takahashi telescopes. All the equipment was carried to the top and back via heavy bulldozer, with us riding on top, on a winding and hair raising mountain trail. A large numbers of very surprised climbers joined our group for 2 whole nights of fabulous viewing under transparent (though not entirely LP free) skies. Cold, windy, raw, rugged, mysterious and oxygen deprived, the summit star party was for me an amazing, rare and thoroughly greuling experience, never to be forgotten. Special thanks to our sponsors and all those who attended (and helped us carry and set up all this stuff!) |
